Abstract:
The reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander (1331–1371) has been studied from different
perspectives. This article discusses the Battle of Rusokastro. The aim is to
answer the question of whether this ruler was a good commander. The information of
the sources allows for a positive answer to be reached. Tsar Ivan Alexander made or
approved of all important decisions. He correctly assessed the military situation, and
he combined diplomatic skills and military pressure. In the Bulgarian sources of the
1330s, emphasis is placed on his military achievements. Therefore, another touch can
be added to the ruler’s portrait.
