Abstract:

In the 14th century, the interest in Byzantine historical works written by secular persons arose in Bulgaria. One of them is the Chronicle of John Zonaras. Its Slavic translation by Symeon Logothete is preserved in one manuscript, RNL F.IV.307, written in 1637 in Suceava from a Bulgarian original. The translation was made at the Tarnovo Literary School. The text is supplemented by an excerpt from the Chronicle, also translated in Bulgaria. The addition differs significantly from the full translation. Some paragraphs included in it are missing, while others are abbreviated. The Bulgarian translator introduced changes similar to those he made in the Chronicle of Logothete. The excerpt from Zonaras’s Chronicle is an important part of Bulgarian historiography in the period of the greatest prosperity of world chronicles as reading matter in Old Bulgarian literature for the laity.
