In this paper we deal with the Tolkien’s character Tom Bombadil in the poems from the collection The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from the Red Book, and with his appearance in The Lord of the Rings (which follows change of form – prose becomes poetry). According to Tolkien’s researchers, Tom Bombadil is the most mysterious figure in Tolkien’s works. His true nature and significance in the saga of the Middle Earth are subject to numerous disputes. We try to interpret the symbols of poems and through review of theories about what is Tom Bombadil (God, Eru Ilúvatar, Vala or Maia, spirit of nature, reader or Tolkin himself), we try to shed a light on his role in Tolkien’s world of Middleearth.
