Abstract:
This paper provides a performance analysis of the Bulgarian National University Cross-Country Championships, governed by the Association for Student Sports, from 2009 to 2025. The primary objective is to evaluate and discuss the competitive standing of different Bulgarian universities, with a particular emphasis on the achievements of St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo. Through a systematic review of championship results, the study quantifies medal counts, identifies key athletes, and tracks performance trends over time. The analysis reveals that University of Veliko Tarnovo has been a dominant force, especially in the men’s category, largely due to a cohort of exceptionally talented and consistent athletes like Ivan Sirakov and Stoyan Vladkov. While other universities, such as the National Sports Academy and Sofia University, have shown strong and increasingly competitive results, University of Veliko Tarnovo’s sustained success highlights an effective model for student-athlete development. The findings contribute to the understanding of elite student athletics in Bulgaria and the factors influencing long-term university sports success.
