Abstract:

Preventive health care is a top priority in modern health policy. Health education and health culture of the population are essential as the policy’s main elements. Nevertheless, medical specialists have very limited responsibility for their development and quality. It is teachers, school as an institution, family and society that have a key role in this regard. In Bulgaria, health education is embedded in various classroom and extracurricular forms but it is not present as an independent study discipline. The purpose of the present study is to determine the extent to which the focus of health education through the introduction of a separate academic discipline has an impact on the level of students’ health knowledge, as well as what their motivation and attitude to participate in such activities is. The results obtained after processing the data indicate that there is a positive change in the health competence of adolescents and an increased desire to have a school subject dedicated to health.
