Abstract:

The article traces the processes of transformation in the sphere of school education from the mid-1940s to the late 1950s, outlining the frame work of the party-political matrix that turned history into an ideological discipline. Special attention is devoted to the social and educational func tions of historical knowledge, to the new history textbooks for secondary schools, and to the methodology of teaching history in the context of Nevena Popova’s pedagogical views.
