Abstract:

In this article I will research Christian symbolism the in tradi tional systems for security in Bulgarian lands in XVII – XIX century. The locks during this period considered are made mainly of wrought iron and are distinguished mainly by their decoration. Christian decorations have magical powers to ward off the evil eye and protect against evil spirits. The analysis made in this article helps to better understand the purpose and complex semantic load of the images on metal locking systems in Bulgaria in the 17th-19th centuries. They differ in type and method of manufacture, but undoubtedly their Christian decorations are directly related to the folk lore and religious beliefs of the local population.
