The Activities of Metropolitan Boris of Nevrokop in the Period 1944 – 1948

Abstract:

Similarly to the overall situation in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as a result of the new political regime established in the country, after September 9, 1944 the situation in the Eparchy of Nevrokop deterio rated greatly. Both the clergy and the Christian faithful in the diocese were subjected to persecution, violence and abuse. All the activities of Metropol itan Boris from now on were aimed at preserving the clergy and the eccle siastical institution in the region. Particularly noteworthy was the action organized by the Metropolitan in 1945 to help repressed priests and their families. The efforts of Metropolitan Boris were also directed against at tacks on temples, church institutions and Christians in the Eparchy of Nev rokop. Of particular importance was the defence of the Bulgarian character of the region in relation to the campaign conducted by the government for the Macedonization of the population of the Pirin region. Metropolitan Bo ris’s activities in defence of the faith and the Church in the Eparchy of Nev rokop were not approved by the government and despite the successes he achieved, he eventually lost his life.
