Abstract:
The article discusses the process of the establishing of the Holy Synod as the supreme governing body of the Bulgarian Church. The reform took place in 1937, when the new governing body replaced the existing Holy Synod, which consisted of four metropolitans elected on a rotating basis. The reform became possible after a long and bitter conflict between the metropolitans. The sustainability of the new form of government adopted at that time was a proof for the ability of the Church leadership to under take difficult reforms that reaffirmed the public confidence in the Church institution as a whole.
