Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using mobile devices to support
vocabulary learning in the English language teaching of students. The mobile devices include smartphones
and tablets. The mobile application used is designed as a web interface for the teacher and as a smartphone
application for the learners. It enables the sharing of learning resources, an analysis of the vocabulary
learning process, quick feedback on progress, and each learner’s ability to choose the vocabulary to learn
by themselves. The effectiveness of this mobile application for learning English vocabulary is analyzed after
having used it with the learners for ten weeks. The results show an improvement in vocabulary learning
of over 80%, and a 71% increase in learning motivation among students. The increase in this motivation
from using mobile applications is due to the opportunities to receive immediate feedback from the practical
use of the learned words and phrases in different contexts, as well as due to the more accessible use of the
applications to review already learned vocabulary compared to textbooks. The main benefits of mobile
devices include improving learners' cognitive capacity, motivation to learn vocabulary in formal and
informal environments, autonomy and confidence, and the possibility of personalized learning and helping
low-achieving students achieve learning goals.
