Abstract:

The concept of industrial symbiosis has evolved over nearly 30 years and is increasingly recognized as a strategic tool for promoting industrial ecology and facilitating a circular economy. Industrial symbiosis enables traditionally separate entities to share resources, boosting sustainability with environmental, economic, and social benefits. On the other hand, waste management, a crucial aspect of environmental management, has garnered significant attention due to the substantial volumes of waste generated by rapid economic growth, urbanization, and a growing population. Effective waste management is essential for maintaining a healthy environment and promoting sustainability. Industrial symbiosis and waste management are interconnected concepts that emphasize the efficient use of resources and the minimization of waste. Industrial symbiosis fosters a win-win situation for both industry and the environment in local and regional circular economies by reducing waste through the reuse and exchange of materials among industries. Meanwhile, waste management ensures the proper handling of any remaining waste. Together, these approaches can lead to more sustainable industrial systems. However, waste management may also present technical and non-technical barriers to industrial symbiosis. It is essential to identify waste management as both a technical and non-technical barrier and to develop strategies to overcome these obstacles. Overcoming waste management as a barrier to industrial symbiosis involves addressing several key challenges that hinder the effective exchange and utilization of waste materials between industries.
