Abstract:
At the current historical moment, the world is torn between two irreconcilable political, economic, and cultural spheres – the East and the West. To modern man, it seems that this conflict is relevant. The reading of Vera Mutafchieva’s fiction demonstrates the historical continuity of this agon but also its possibilities for ambiguous value interpretation and assessment. In recent centuries, the East has been considered barbaric, rotten, and unpromising. Is (was) it just that? The West is valued as sophisticated, diplomatic, and progressive. – Is (was) it just that? There are answers in the novels of the Great Lady of modern Bulgarian historical prose, but more than that are the possibilities for discursive reading.
