Abstract:
The study applies a comparative approach to conventional units based on body language signs (gestural phraseology). Gestural phraseology and the non-verbal signs it is connected with have high communicative value in conditions of bilingualism. Their use contributes to achieving clarity in communication between speakers of different languages. The article focuses on the semantic derivation of three common Balkan phraseological units. The analysis reveals the transformation of physiological action encoded in the gesture into a sociocultural action enclosed in the phraseological form.
